The San Francisco Randonneurs were founded in 1990 in order to meet particpation requirements for the Paris Brest Paris Randonnée. Founding members, Darryl Skrabak (1941-2019) and Henry Kingman completed Paris Brest Paris with Henry completing the 1999 event in under 50 hours. Darryl was a San Francisco resident and a cycling enthusiast for several decades. His writings appeared in Bicycling Magazine, and the magazines of the League of American Wheelmen/Bicyclists and American Youth Hostels. Henry is an accomplished cyclist having participated in endurance rides in Australia, the USA and Europe. Henry is the author of a route guide of San Francisco.
Todd Teachout, our Regional Brevet Administrator (RBA) from 2003 through 2007, completed the 1999 San Francisco Brevet Series and Paris Brest Paris in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015. He raced extensively in the 1970s, has toured a little bit and has completed many recreational rides including the Tour of the California Alps (the Death Ride) and several California Triple Crown Double Century rides. His passion for minimally supported brevets caused him to propose and be authorized to promote the 2003 San Francisco Brevet Series.
In the Fall of 2007, Rob Hawks was approved as the RBA for San Francisco and from January 2008 through today Rob continues to serve as RBA. Rob has ridden quite a number of long distance events, completing 27 CTC double centuries, volunteering for 22 CTC doubles, as well as Paris, Brest, Paris in 2011, 2015 and 2019, plus the California Central Coast 1000k in 2010 and 2014 also. Rob earned the RUSA Mondial award in 2016 for completing over 40,000 kms of RUSA events. During Rob's tenure as RBA, the club has grown from about 40 RUSA members to now well over 400 RUSA members. SFR has also expanded the annual calendar from the 4 or 5 events held each year up through 2008 to often as many as 30 events each year. Rob was elected to the RUSA board of directors twice and during those terms served as Vice President and President. Rob also serves currently on the Membership, and the Brevet Coordination committees.
The SF Randonneurs organized the San Francisco qualifying brevet series in 1990/91, 1999 and from 2003 until present. The SF Randonneurs also organized the 1000 mile California Millennium ride in 2000 (see http://www.milly.org). San Francisco Randonneurs membership includes over four hundred dedicated cyclists ranging in age from 17 to 65+ and from varied career paths.
To belong to the SF Randonneurs you need to be interested in long distance cycling. And, of course, you need to fill out and submit a membership application. We are a very low-key group. Specific rules and activities beyond PBP qualifying will be at the discretion of the membership. We do not support commercial interests and our membership roster is not shared with other organizations.
